With the calendar turned to March, No. 5 Florida basketball (25-4, 12-4 SEC) finds itself still fighting for a No. 1 seeed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Florida Gators are currently projected as a No. 2 seed on most bracketology websites, but that could change if UF closes the regular season with back-to-back wins at No. 8 Alabama (Wednesday, 7 p.m., ESPN) and at home against Ole Miss (Saturday, 6 p.m., SEC Network).
Florida can clinch second place in the conference and a double bye in the SEC Tournament with a win over the Crimson Tide (23-6, 12-4 SEC) on Wednesday.
“Anytime you’re sitting there with two games left in the regular season and still with a chance to get second place in the best conference college basketball has seen in 20 years, yeah, it’s a really good spot to be in,” Florida basketball coach Todd Golden said, “We have two really big challenges ahead of us.”
How Florida basketball fared last week:
No. 3 Florida 89, No. 11 Texas A&M 70: Senior guard Will Richard led five scorers in double figures with 25 points as Florida pulled away in the second half against the Aggies to improve to 14-1 at home this season
Georgia 88, No. 3 Florida 83: Richard scored a career-high 30 points, but it wasn’t enough for Florida to overcome falling into a 26-point hole in the first half. Florida had its 12-game win streak over the rival Bulldogs snapped and dropped to 6-3 on the road on the season in the loss at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.
