Kansas plagued by turnovers; falters down the stretch in loss to Houston

HOUSTON, Tex. – Kansas didn’t have enough away to come away with a road win against No. 3 Houston, who will win the Big 12 for the second consecutive season.

The Jayhawks were plagued by 20 turnovers. Houston also had 17 offensive rebounds, and attempted 27 more shots than Kansas.

Houston is the third team to sweep Kansas under Bill Self.

Hunter Dickinson led Kansas with 17 points and 12 rebounds, but also had seven turnovers. KJ Adams Jr. contributed 15 points. David Coit provided a spark off the bench with 14, knocking down four three-pointers.

LJ Cryer paced Houston with a game-high 22 points.

Houston notched a 7-0 run at the end of the first half, but it was ended after Zeke Mayo made a tough, highly contested layup as time expired. The Cougars took a 30-27 lead into the half.

Kansas’ only lead of the second half came with 16 minutes remaining on a Dajuan Harris layup. Houston responded with a 12-5 run to go up 48-42 with over 10 minutes remaining.

The Jayhawks got within two points with 20 seconds remaining on a Coit three-pointer, but a Kansas turnover and Houston free throws iced the game.

Kansas now sits at 19-11 overall and 10-9 in the conference. They will close out the Big 12 regular season at home with Senior Day against No. 24 Arizona on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
