Former Wisconsin basketball transfer’s role with new program continues to shrink rapidly

Wisconsin transfer guard A.J. Storr played just five minutes during Kansas’ hard-fought loss to No. 3 Houston on Monday.

Storr’s five minutes included just two points, both from the free throw line, one field goal attempt and two turnovers. The Wisconsin transfer’s lack of playing time against Houston continues a recent trend, as he’s played just 18 combined minutes during the team’s last three games, scoring just five total points during that time.

The latest performance brings his per-game averages down to 5.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists on 37.4% shooting and 26.5% from three.

The Houston loss continued what has been a disappointing season for Kansas. After entering the season No. 1 in the AP Poll and holding that position through Dec. 2, the Jayhawks are now just 19-11 overall and 10-9 in Big 12 play, plus currently reside outside the AP Top 25. The team is just 2-4 in its last six games and 5-7 in its last 12.

The lack of playing time for former top-ranked transfers Storr and Rylan Griffen (Alabama) has been a major factor in those extended struggles. The two played just three combined minutes in the second half of Monday’s loss to Houston.

In the 2nd half:

Rylan Griffen has played 2 minutes
AJ Storr has played 1 minute

They had 0 points, 0 rebounds, and 2 turnovers in those 3 minutes

Storr’s season is on an opposite trajectory to former Wisconsin transfer Chucky Hepburn’s at Louisville. The point guard is likely to earn All-ACC honors when the season concludes. His latest performance against Pittsburgh brought his per-game averages up to 16.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.4 steals on 45.2% shooting and 36% from three — career-highs across the board. Hepburn leads a Louisville team that has won seven games in a row and 17 of its last 18, currently sits just one game back of first-place Duke in the ACC standings and is ranked No. 14 in the AP Poll.

There’s an argument that Wisconsin missed a Hepburn-like veteran point…
