Florida basketball senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. has been announced as a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, an annual accolade recognizing the nation’s top college point guard. The honor, named after Hall of Famer Bob Cousy, is decided by a committee and includes a component of fan voting.
Clayton has been the backbone of this Gators team this season. He leads the team in points (16.9) and assists (4.0) per game. The guard also averages 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 43.9% from the field and 36.3% from beyond the arc.
Florida basketball head coach Todd Golden had high praise for Clayton after the Gators’ 89-70 victory over the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday.
“I mean, I think he’s continuing to become just a winning player,” Golden said during his postgame press conference. “You know, and obviously he’s generally really efficient, makes crazy tough shots all the time, makes it look easy.”
Clayton finds himself in elite company as a finalist, joined by Alabama’s Mark Sears, Marquette’s Kam Jones, Purdue’s Braden Smith and Tennessee’s Zakai Zeigler. This nomination marks another milestone in Clayton’s collegiate career, having also been listed among the top candidates for the Naismith and Wooden Awards earlier this season.
The fan voting segment for the Bob Cousy Award starts on March 7 at hoophallawards.com. The fan votes will be incorporated into the final committee selection process later this month.
