Wisconsin basketball dropped a tough road contest at Michigan State on Sunday.
The game saw the downside of the classic saying: “Live by the three, die by the three.” Wisconsin has lived on its excellent shooting and fast-paced offensive attack for much of the season. On Sunday, the Badgers had their worst shooting performance of the year, if not of the last several seasons. The team made just five of its 32 three-point attempts (15.6%). As a result, it scored a season-low 62 points and failed to take advantage of an inconsistent Spartans attack.
For any looking for a simple reason for why the Badgers lost: they failed to make shots from long range, while still attempting them at an above-average rate. That poor three-point shooting was uniform across the roster. John Blackwell went 1-of-7 from deep, John Tonje made just 1-of-8 attempts, Kamari McGee, the team’s leader in three-point percentage, went 0-of-5, and big men Steven Crowl and Nolan Winter went a combined 2-of-8.
Michigan State star freshman Jase Richardson deserves credit, as his play was a major factor in the game’s result. His three assists in the closing minutes allowed the Spartans to execute a game-deciding 8-0 run from the 4:07 mark to 0:40. That turned the team’s 62-60 lead into an insurmountable 10-point advantage. With it, Wisconsin saw its slim Big Ten title hopes eliminated.
The Badgers now have work left to clinch a double-bye in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. After that, a few wins are likely necessary to confirm a top-three seed in the NCAA Tournament. The tough road loss to Michigan State predictably hurt Wisconsin fans’ optimism. Some are even flashing back to the program’s previous struggles in March.
Here is some of the most notable reaction from Wisconsin’s narrow loss to top-ranked Michigan State:
Wisconsin won’t win when it can’t hit shots
