LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball’s 78-73 loss Saturday at home against No. 10 Texas Tech garnered a lot of attention, and for multiple reasons.
For one, the Jayhawks dropped to 19-10 overall and 10-8 against the Big 12 Conference this season. As a team that entered the season as the preseason No. 1 team in the nation and Big 12 title favorite has fallen far short of expectations.
For another, following the loss against Texas Tech a Kansas senior guard Zeke Mayo revealed in a post on X — the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — multiple vile messages he had received. Mayo shared screenshots of messages that used racist language, took aim at his personal health and safety, or both. In the aftermath of sharing that post, Mayo has received extensive support on social media
Later Saturday evening, KU coach Bill Self released a statement through his team’s X account. The statement referenced the loss against Texas Tech and that any criticism should be directed at him.

“The game today was a very good college basketball game,” Self said in his statement. “We played a very good team and we got beat. We had some individuals have exceptional individual games, and we had some maybe not play up to the standard they’ve set for themselves. But, everyone on our team, coaches included, myself, more than anyone, had opportunities to impact the game. A play here or there, that could have been the difference in the game over the course of 40 minutes. Texas Tech made more plays than we did.”
Self continued: “We competed. We tried. We came up short and I’m proud of their efforts and I’m also proud of their preparation to be ready for the game. We haven’t had the overall year that we had hoped for ourselves, nor the year that many other people have expected, but it hasn’t been from a lack of caring. I can do a lot of things better.
