No. 12 Texas A&M’s (20-9. 9-7, SEC) five-game winning streak in conference play seems like ancient history, as the Aggies have now dropped four straight after falling to No. 3 Florida 89-70 in another lopsided offensive breakdown after an encouraging start in the first half.
Losing streaks are not foreign to head coach Buzz Williams during his time with the program. Still, this late in the season, with NCAA Tournament seeding on the line, Texas A&M’s lack of offensive identity combined with senior guard Wade Taylor IV’s poor play has once again placed the team in a difficult spot with No. 1 Auburn heading into Reed Arena on Tuesday night.
After the game, Buzz Williams briefly took the podium in Gainsville with the media to discuss the loss, pointing out that losing the rebounding battle and providing Florida second-chance scoring opportunities heavily contributed to the loss.
However, when he was asked what he takes out of the current four-game losing streak, the sixth-year head coach noted that the last six games are among the most challenging stretches in college basketball this season:
“I think some of it is just the scheudling, out last six games would Top 5 in the country in regards to the toughest schedule, not to justify the results, as I understand we’re judged in accordance with the results” Williams stated.
Williams stated that “live turnovers” against Mississippi State and Tennessee led to offensive breakdowns. Still, he did note that the Aggies improved at making shots near the rim against the Gators despite shooting 29% from beyond the arc.
Texas A&M’s 3-point defense has led to all four losses, allowing each opponent to shoot 42% from deep, including three players setting career shooting highs.
Texas A&M will host No. 1 Auburn on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on ESPN.
