The Auburn Tigers did something on Saturday they had not accomplished since 1988. That is beat the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington. They did so by winning 94-78 in Rupp Arena.
Bruce Pearl had his name mentioned in the past when it pertains to the Kentucky job. In fact, when the school parted ways with John Calipari his name was mentioned early as a potential target. Pearl had some fun with the past in his press conference after the game.
“Every time y’all have an opening, my name comes up. Why would you want me as a coach when I can’t win at Rupp?” Pearl joked Saturday, admitting that is how he would start his press conference if Auburn had lost.
Pearl’s name being mentioned with a program of the caliber of Kentucky is just a testament to the incredible job he has done at Auburn. He has taken what many believed the worse program in the SEC to a consistent winner. Auburn has now won four SEC regular season championships with Pearl leading the program. The Tigers have also won two SEC Tournament championships and made a final four appearance in 2019.
The Tigers are 235-121 since 2014 and more wins will be on the way as long as Pearl is on the bench coaching this program. With the wins and the championships, it is understandable why a high-profile program would want Pearl as their head coach. Indiana and Miami have openings and will be looking to make a splash hire. With that said, Pearl has shown no interest in leaving Auburn and should end his career on the plains.
