After a record-setting first half, Rhode Island basketball falls at UMass. Here’s how

Despite scoring a season-high 56 points in the first half to take an early lead at Massachusetts, a second-half run by the Minutemen led to Rhode Island’s latest loss in Atlantic 10 play, 91-88, on Saturday.

Massachusetts scored 14 unanswered points to take an 81-77 lead with 6:31 to play, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by Daniel Sanford-Hankins. After that record-setting first half, Rhode Island was mired in a scoring drought that lasted more than five minutes before a Sebastian Thomas field goal to make it 81-79. The Rams would tie the game at 85 each thanks to a David Green 3-pointer with 2:53 left, but could not overtake UMass in the closing minutes.

David Green, shown in a Feb. 12 game vs. St. Bonaventure, scored a career-high 30 points in URI’s loss at UMass on Saturday.

In the first half, the two teams combined for 103 points and 13 lead changes, as Rhode Island made 10 3-pointers and took a 56-47 halftime lead. Green had 16 points (4-of-4 from 3-point land), while Jamarques Lawrence added 15 and made three treys of his own. Thomas had nine points and seven assists in the opening 20 minutes as Rhode Island shot 58.3 percent (21-of-36) overall. The Rams made 16 3-pointers on the night, tying a program record.

For Massachusetts, Jaylen Curry and Rahsool Diggins combined for 26 points in the first half. Diggins led the Minutemen with 29 points, Curry added 22 and Hankins-Sanford had 19 in the loss.

Green scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Rams in scoring. His eight 3-pointers were a career high and were just one shy of URI’s program record. Lawrence had 18 points and Thomas finished with 17 in the loss.

With just two games left in the regular season, Saturday’s loss means the Rams (17-11, 6-10 Atlantic 10) will end the season with a losing record in conference play for the fifth straight year. URI will visit St. Joseph’s on Wednesday and host Fordham on Saturday in…
