If Rhode Island is to avoid a losing record in Atlantic 10 play this season, then it has no room for error. With three games left, URI will visit its New England neighbor and long-time rival UMass on Saturday.

The Rams are coming off an 85-77 loss to Dayton on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center. Rhody took an early lead in that contest, but cold shooting for long stretches sank their chances for another conference victory. Dayton was plus-24 from 3-point range and doubled up the Rams, 26-13, on points off turnovers to win for the fifth time in their last seven.

Rhode Island and Massachusetts are meeting for the 166th time, but this will mark the final conference game between the two schools. UMass is planning a move to the Mid-American Conference in all sports beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. After Saturday’s game, UMass will tie Brown for the most games against Rhode Island all time.

UMass has dropped four straight games and is coming off a 74-52 loss at George Washington. Rahsool Diggins leads Massachusetts this season, with 16.8 points per game.

Saturday’s winner could potentially move up to as high as a tie for seventh place in the standings, as both URI and UMass both currently sit a half-game behind George Washington and St. Bonaventure for eighth place in the A-10 standings.

URI has won two of the last three meetings with Massachusetts, including an 88-62 victory on Jan. 29 in Kingston. After Saturday, URI’s two remaining regular-season games are March 5 at St. Joseph’s and March 8 at home vs. Fordham.
