Tre Holloman’s biggest shot of his live lifts selfless Michigan State basketball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Everything about Tre Holloman defines this Michigan State basketball team.

Emerging as a starter, only to selflessly move to the bench for a freshman and yet continuing to persevere and play at a high level.

Providing tenacious defense and the toughness Tom Izzo cherishes.

Giving a veteran presence and demanding perspective as a captain.

It all coalesced in the final 50 seconds Wednesday night against No. 15 Maryland. In one of the biggest moments in the eighth-ranked Spartans’ season, he showed the poise to overcome his mistakes and the presence to deliver a picture-perfect shot from about 60 feet away.

That was followed by the shock of watching the desperation 3-pointer splash through the net for a stunning 58-55 victory, and the unbridled jubilation after what he termed the biggest shot — “easily” — of his basketball life so far.

“I knew that it was good, because we practice those,” said Holloman, who had nine points but made just three of 12 shots and committed a turnover and foul less than 45 seconds before his game-winner. “Once it left my hand, and then I (watched) it go right there, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s good.’ And then it dropped. I was like, ‘Oh my god, let’s go.’”

With his mother, grandmother, stepfather and cousins in the stands, the Minneapolis native gave them — and everyone else at Xfinity Center and at home — a memorable moment that summed up his journey, as well as the season so far for the Spartans.
