Injury, illness leave ASU basketball with 4 scholarship players for BYU game

It was bad enough Arizona State was without freshman standout Jayden Quaintance, who was injured late in Sunday’s game at Kansas State.

Then point guard Alston Mason was unable to go due to sickness.

Then guard Adam Miller took a hard fall in the first half. Miller returned in the second, only to be shut down because coach Bobby Hurley didn’t think he looked right. In his absence, the Sun Devils were down to four scholarship players — two of those being Bobby Hurley Jr. and Trevor Best, who have seen little playing time.

Oh and this opponent happened to be No. 25 BYU, which was coming off an upset of Arizona on Saturday. Not surprisingly it was the Cougars prevailing 91-81 on Wednesday in Big 12 play at Desert Financial Arena.

“I’m afraid to go to bed,” Hurley said. “I’m going to wake up not know what tomorrow is going to bring.”

Let’s take a closer look at what materialized:

What went right

The Sun Devils battled: The fact that Best had to play 24 minutes and Bobby Hurley had to play eight tells you how shorthanded the Sun Devils were. Down by 17 late at 91-74, they crept back to cut the deficit to 10. They got as close as nine points at 78-69 with 5:34 to go on a 3-pointer by Amier Ali.

Stayed out of foul trouble: With limited bodies, ASU could not afford foul trouble and it stayed away from that. The Sun Devils were called for only four in the first half, all by different players. The first player to pick up two was Adam Miller, who got his second four minutes into the second half.

Free throws: The Sun Devils connected on 19 of 26 tries (73.1%). Trevor Best made all six of his and Basheer Jihad made all four of his. This was an area where ASU had a huge advantage because BYU made only six of its 15 attempts.

Trevor Best was solid: Best is the 17-year-old who still should be playing high school basketball but enrolled at ASU in January. His playing time has been limited as he is getting acclimated to the college game. He previously played only nine minutes over five games but…
