On Wednesday night, USC men’s basketball fell at home to Ohio State. It was the Trojans’ sixth loss in their past seven games. The team is now in significant danger of not even qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis in two weeks.
USC’s defense was particularly poor Wednesday night. Ohio State shot 55% behind the 3-point line, making 11 triples. The Buckeyes scored 52 points in the first half, putting the Trojans into an early hole that was ultimately too much for them to come back from.
Following the game, USC head coach Eric Musselman lamented his team’s defensive performance.
“I thought the defense in the first half, was, you know, probably the worst defense I’ve ever had a team play in my college tenure,” Musselman said. “I’m not gonna call out any individual players. We talk about that behind closed doors.
“The defense in the first half and the turnovers is why we lost the game. Second half we played good enough to win.
“Look credit to them. They beat us. They took it to us at the beginning of the game. There’s no excuses at all.”
If the Trojans want to have any shot of making it to Indianapolis, they need to step it up on the defensive end moving forward. Their next opportunity to do so will be Saturday afternoon on the road against Oregon.
