LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball coach Bill Self admitted Thursday he isn’t tracking his team’s potential NCAA tournament seeding as the regular season winds down.
It’s something Self has done in the past, he acknowledged. But this year, he isn’t doing it all. And his reasoning alludes to the reality that Kansas (19-9, 10-7 in Big 12) hasn’t been performing at the level of other Big 12 Conference or national title contenders to be viewed as a team that will earn one of the higher seeds.

“We’re in the big group this year,” Self explained. “We’re not in the finite group.”
Self, asked if that’s freeing at all, added: “I’d rather be in the other group. … I’d say, and I could be exaggerating, 15 of the 22 years we’ve been here we’re looking at eight teams — and of those eight teams, who are we ahead? Who are we not ahead? Early on.
Now, you can’t do that because you’d be looking at — there’s 30, 40 teams out there that could potentially fall. We could move up this high, or we could drop, whatever. We’re in the mix, but we’re not in the small mix at the top of the seed line.”
Kansas is coming off of a season in which it was a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament, but the two years prior to that the Jayhawks were a No. 1 seed each time. This year, Self and company could very well be handed a seed that’s lower than the one they received last year.
That would put the team in an even tougher position to reach its first Sweet 16 since it went on to win a national championship in 2022, a reality many likely would have been shocked by, given the preseason expectations of each of the three editions of teams that followed that title.
This current season doesn’t get any easier either, looking at the final three games ahead of postseason play.
Kansas has No. 10 Texas Tech on Saturday at home, No. 4 Houston on March 3 on the road, and No. 21…
