Without RJ Davis, I’m confident the UNC men’s basketball team wouldn’t be anywhere closing to sniffing the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
Even in a “down” offensive year, Davis is still showcasing why he is North Carolina’s go-to option. Davis has nine 20-point performances on the year, including a season-high 30 against Dayton in the Tar Heels’ Maui Invitational Opener. On multiple occasions, most notably in an overtime win against Boston College on January 25, Davis utilizes his clutch gene to help UNC close out games.
During North Carolina’s 96-85 win at Florida State on Monday, February 24, Davis added another milestone to his list.
Davis scored 20 points, upping his career total to 2,592 and passing Wake Forest great Dickie Hemric for third all-time in ACC scoring. Davis now sits behind just two people: Tar Heel great Tyler Hansbrough (2,872), who won a National Championship in 2009 and Duke/longtime NBA guard J.J. Redick (2,769), who is currently the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach.
Davis and his UNC (18-11, 11-6 ACC) teammates still have plenty of ground to make up for a shot at March Madness, but they’re in a solid position. North Carolina matched its season-best 4-game winning streak by beating Florida State Monday night. The Tar Heels have a favorable 2-game stretch coming up, hosting Miami on Saturday, March 1, then traveling to Virginia Tech the following Tuesday for their road finale.
UNC also likely needs to beat archrival Duke at home on Saturday, March 8, then win at least one ACC Tournament game. North Carolina will need to win the entire ACC Tournament if it fails to beat Duke, though.
Regardless of how long the Tar Heels play basketball for this season, they’ll go as far as RJ Davis takes them.
