John Blackwell returns to dominant form in Wisconsin basketball’s big win vs. Washington

Entering Tuesday’s action, it had been over a month since Wisconsin sophomore guard John Blackwell scored over 20 points in a game.

Against the Washington Huskies (13-14, 4-13 Big Ten), the Michigan native reminded fans exactly what he’s capable of on the offensive end. The 2023-24 All-Big Ten selection logged his first career double-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes of action to captain Wisconsin (22-6, 12-5 Big Ten) to a 26-point win over the lowly Huskies.

The 6-foot-4 playmaker made his presence felt early and often. Within the final nine minutes of the first half, he dropped 17 points to turn Wisconsin’s seven-point edge into a 15-point margin. Eight games had separated Blackwell’s 24-point outing from his most recent big scoring output — a 23-point performance on the road against a talented UCLA crew. Star wing John Tonje made his official bid for the Big Ten Player of the Year during that span, scoring more than 20 points in seven of the team’s eight contests. While Blackwell did orchestrate five games of at least 10 points, Tonje was Wisconsin’s undisputed No. 1 scorer.

That will likely remain the case for the rest of the season. However, Tuesday’s win against Washington provided the perfect opportunity for Blackwell to regroup on the offensive side of the ball before the Badgers enter the final stretch of the 2024-25 season. If he can consistently generate around 15 points on efficient shooting, the Badgers become an even more dangerous team. Him and Tonje would create a 1-2 scoring punch that would be nearly impossible to stop.

Blackwell will be tasked with…
