Big Ten basketball race heats up as regular season enters home stretch

Several storied rivalries were renewed. Two top 15 teams suffered stunning upset losses. A new first place team in the conference emerged. The Big Ten basketball championship race is now down to the last few games of the regular season. Teams have just four games left, two this week and two next week. That’s it. Then the Big Ten Tournament begins in the second full week of March.

Big Ten basketball is led by the Michigan schools. The Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines are both 13-3 in the conference and are dueling for a trophy. That is the main story in the conference. Below Sparta and Blue, however, there are lots of other interesting stories and plot points to monitor. There is no shortage of storylines.

Let’s take a look at all of the results from around the Big Ten this past weekend:

Friday: No. 14 Michigan State 75, No. 12 Michigan 62

The Spartans went into Ann Arbor and got a huge rivalry victory to take over the top spot in the conference standings.

Saturday: Oregon 77, No. 11 Wisconsin 73

The Badgers suffered a brutal upset loss at home.

Saturday: Penn State 69, Minnesota 60

The Nittany Lions won on the road in a matchup between two of the conference’s worst teams.

Saturday: Iowa 85, Washington 79

Speaking of bad teams, the Huskies remained at the bottom of the Big Ten standings with a road loss in Iowa.

Sunday: Indiana 73, No. 13 Purdue 15

The Hoosiers upset their in-state rivals at home.

Sunday: UCLA 69, Ohio State 61

The Bruins took down the Buckeyes in Westwood.

Sunday: Rutgers 95, USC 85

The Trojans fell on the road at Rutgers for their fifth loss in their last six games.

Monday: Michigan 49, Nebraska 46

The Wolverines significantly increased their chances of being able to share the Big Ten title.
