Wisconsin basketball (21-6, 11-5 Big Ten) fell to the No. 3 seed line in Joe Lunardi’s ESPN bracketology update on Sunday.
The Badgers fell after a late-game meltdown led to a home loss to the Oregon Ducks on Saturday. The loss not only prompted movement in Lunardi’s bracketology but also urged metrics to alter Wisconsin’s position near the top of national hierarchies — Greg Gard’s crew also slipped to No. 9 in KenPom and No. 13 in the NCAA NET rankings. Additionally, the team now sits at No. 21 in ESPN’s BPI.
While the loss to Oregon isn’t a terrible one, a win would have pushed the Badgers closer to the No. 1 spot in the Big Ten standings, as well as solidified their spot as a No. 2 seed in NCAA Tournament bracket projections.
After boasting the No. 7 overall designation in Lunardi’s bracketology after vanquishing Illinois on Feb. 18, the analyst currently ranks the Badgers as the No. 10 overall team in the nation. Wisconsin now sits behind Auburn, Duke, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Houston, Iowa State, Michigan State and Texas A&M. The Volunteers, Spartans and Aggies all leapfrogged the Badgers on Sunday.
Here are the top seeds from Lunardi’s updated bracket:
East: No. 1 Duke (No. 2 overall), No. 2 Tennessee, No. 3 Texas Tech, No. 4 Michigan
West: No. 1 Florida (No. 4 overall), No. 2 Michigan State, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Arizona
Midwest: No. 1 Alabama (No. 3 overall), No. 2 Iowa State, No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 4 St. John’s
South: No. 1 Auburn (No. 1 overall) No. 2 Houston, No. 3 Kentucky, No. 4 Purdue
While the second-half collapse against the Ducks is certainly discouraging, it does not define the Badgers’ 2024-25 outlook. Wisconsin still holds a top position in the AP Poll and most national metrics. Its upcoming contest against Washington, the Big Ten’s worst team this season, will offer the Badgers a valuable opportunity to regroup entering a pivotal March 2 road trip to Michigan State.
The Badgers and Huskies tip off on Tuesday night at 9:00 p.m. ET, 8:00 p.m. CT at the Kohl…
