Updated Big Ten basketball standings after Michigan State’s big road win over Michigan

The Big Ten basketball standings experienced a major shift over the weekend.

Michigan State defeated first-place Michigan on the road on Friday night, overtaking the top rival and claiming the conference’s top spot. That result opened the door for Wisconsin, which sat 1 1/2 games behind the Spartans at the time, to step closer to first place. The Badgers had a Saturday afternoon contest against Oregon on the schedule, a game everybody expected Greg Gard’s team to win.

Wisconsin was well on its way to that winning result with 6:00 remaining in regulation. It led 64-50 after a John Tonje layup, a double-digit advantage it had maintained through most of the contest. When the clock hit 0:00, however, the two teams were tied at 66. Wisconsin had allowed Oregon to orchestrate an extended 16-2 run to close the game, mostly thanks to sloppy turnovers and poor game management. The Ducks would go on to win in overtime, damaging the Badgers’ plans of title contention.

Wisconsin is still in a strong position in the conference standings. It hosts Washington on Tuesday night before a season-defining road trip to Michigan State on Sunday. A pair of wins could vault the team right back into contention for the top spot.
