Michigan basketball had been steadily rising up the rankings over the course of the 2024-25 college basketball season with big wins over Wisconsin (which is aging quite well as time moves on) and Purdue.
Friday night marked a big opportunity for the maize and blue with rival Michigan State coming to town, the No. 13 team in the country, just one spot behind the Wolverines. However, Michigan never found its footing outside of a stretch in the first half and faltered to the rival Spartans in the first of two regular-season matchups.
As a result, the coaches around college basketball penalized the maize and blue, dropping them three spots to No. 15.
Michigan still has its win over No. 11 Wisconsin, but now has a loss to No. 8 MSU. The Wolverines still have to face No. 16 Maryland and has one loss and one win over No. 20 Purdue, which fell seven spots this past week.
Here are the full rankings.
