Can Monmouth basketball build on comeback win? 3 keys vs Northeastern as CAA Tourney looms

WEST LONG BRANCH – For a team that’s struggled away from home, Monmouth’s dramatic comeback win at Hofstra Thursday could be a turning point, with the Hawks taking two of three games on the road.

Which sets up an incredibly important two-game homestand, beginning with tonight’s visit from Northeastern at OceanFirst Bank Center, where they’re 19-2 since early last season. Tipoff is at 7 p.m., with the game televised on CBS Sports Network.

Monmouth (10-18, 8-7 CAA), having won five of the last seven games, enters the final week of the regular season alone in sixth place with three games remaining, including a Thursday home showdown with Elon, before closing the regular season Saturday at Drexel.

Monmouth’s Madison Durr directs the offense against Hofstra on Feb. 20, 2025 in Hempstead, N.Y.

If Monmouth were to sweep the games they’d finish with an 11-7 league record, which could push them as high as the No. 5 seed. It’s important because the fifth and sixth seeds open the tournament on March 8 by playing the winners of the two first round games – seeds 11-14 have play-in games on March 7 – and avoid the top two seeds until the semifinals.

Northeastern (15-13, 7-8 CAA) has had its moments this season. The Huskies ended Campbell’s seven-game winning streak on Feb.13, and went 8-4 in non-conference play. They come in off a 73-62 home loss to Charleston.

Rashad King, a 6-6 junior, is fifth in the CAA in scoring at 18.2 ppg., to go with 6.4 rebounds. Harold Woods, a 6-5 junior, is averaging 12.4 ppg., and a team-best 7.4 rpg. Also in double-figures is 6-5 junior LA Pratt at 10.8 ppg.

Here are three keys for Monmouth against Northeastern. Check back later tonight for coverage of this CAA matchup:

1. Homecourt advantage
