NEW YORK – There was no Madison Square Garden magic that could lift the UConn men’s basketball team on Sunday afternoon as it fell to No. 10 St. John’s, 89-75, in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,812 in the Big Apple.
UConn fell behind by as many as 22 points early in the second half. Alex Karaban started to turn his day around after the break, bringing the Huskies back to within single digits at one point as he scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. But St. John’s put UConn away with its defense, forcing 18 turnovers, nine in each half, to run away with the victory.
Tarris Reed Jr. carried the Huskies through the game’s early stages but fouled out with four minutes to go and finished with 15 points and six rebounds, all on the offensive end.
UConn dropped to 18-9 on the season and 10-6 in the Big East. St. John’s got one step closer to clinching the league’s regular season title, sweeping the season series with the Huskies and improving to 24-4 on the year and 15-2 in league play.

UConn had nine turnovers in the opening half, four of them from Karaban, who struggled inbounding the ball against the full court pressure from the Red Storm.

But the Johnnies landed a pair from deep in the game’s first three minutes and added three more during a 16-2 run that helped built their lead to 13 with just under six minutes to go in the half. The wheels really started to come off for the Huskies as they allowed a second 3-pointer to RJ Luis Jr. before Samson Johnson was called for a flagrant one foul, granting an additional pair of free throws.
Aaron Scott nailed the seventh 3-pointer of the half and Luis hit another in the final two minutes to push St. John’s lead to 18. The Johnnies closed…
