On Saturday, Alabama men’s basketball will look to rebound from a loss to archrival Auburn when it hosts another ranked SEC team, Kentucky, at Coleman Coliseum.
While the Crimson Tide had a proud hardwood history even before Nate Oats first arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2019, its opponent is in a different tier of the sport and has a pedigree that few, if any, programs across the country can match.
The Wildcats are, quite literally, a blue blood, with eight national championships, more than 2,400 wins and 17 Final Fours, the first two of which rank them second all-time among Division I programs. Those accomplishments were reached behind some of the greatest and most iconic players, coaches and teams in the sport’s history.

Over all those years, Kentucky largely had its way against SEC competition, making it a persistent benchmark for others in the conference. If you can beat the Wildcats, you’ve likely got a pretty good team.
Given that lofty perch Kentucky occupies, Alabama has the chance to do something quite impressive this weekend. A victory against the Wildcats on Saturday would be their second win against Kentucky this season, which would give the Tide a regular-season sweep of the series.

You only have to go back so far into the Tide’s record book to find the last time they managed to go undefeated against Kentucky in at least two games in a season.
Alabama swept the Wildcats in their two matchups during the pandemic-altered 2020-21 season, winning 85-65 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on Jan. 12, 2021 and following it up exactly two weeks later with a 70-59 victory at Coleman Coliseum.
