The day certainly started better than it ended for Michigan basketball.

On Friday afternoon, the program announced it had agreed to a new five-year contract with head coach Dusty May, complete with a one-year extension, million dollar annual raise, and NIL investment. The mood couldn’t quite carry through the evening, when No. 12 Michigan fell to No. 13 Michigan State, 75-62, at Crisler Center, wrapping up with visiting fans chanting “Go Green, Go White!” as maize and blue fans streamed for the exits.

Vladislav Goldin led U-M with 21 points, while Nimari Burnett scored 12 and Danny Wolf filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. But the combination of freshman Jase Richardson, who finished with 21 points, and vet Tre Hollomon, who had 18, proved too much.

Michigan had its chances on Friday. The Wolverines blitzed the Spartans with a 15-0 run in the first half to turn an eight-point deficit into a seven-point lead, but MSU stayed within an…
