AMES – The biggest topic surrounding Iowa State women’s basketball is whether the Cyclones have done enough to reach the NCAA Tournament.
It’s a subject that everyone seems to be talking about, even coach Bill Fennelly.
“Sometimes coach Fenn will slide a comment in from bracketology,” said sophomore post player Audi Crooks.
The impact of Saturday’s game against Baylor is hard to ignore. Iowa State’s murky postseason picture could gain some much-needed clarity when the Cyclones (19-9 overall, 10-5 in Big 12 Conference play) take on the No. 22 Bears (23-5 overall, 13-2 in Big 12) at Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas at 1:30 p.m. CT.
“It would be huge for us,” Crooks said.
A win over Baylor could have a massive impact on the rest of Iowa State’s season. Despite struggling against top-tier teams all season, the Cyclones enter Saturday’s game in the hunt to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Fennelly’s team has managed to stay in the conversation by avoiding unexpected losses.
Iowa State center Audi Crooks (55) and the rest of the Cyclones have a tough task Saturday against Baylor. A win could see the team’s NCAA Tournament hopes improve dramatically.
Since the team’s resume doesn’t have any glaring blemishes, ESPN women’s basketball bracketologist Charlie Creme has consistently had Iowa State on the bubble in most of his recent projections. But the Cyclones have had plenty of opportunities to move off the bubble, including back-to-back games against Kansas State and TCU which are both top-25 teams.

Iowa State failed to take advantage of both those opportunities or any other big one presented so far. The team has gone 0-6 against teams ranked in the top 25 this season. That lack of a marquee victory has left Iowa State on the edge of the NCAA Tournament.
