Roy Williams on Cooper Flagg: ‘I admire the way he plays’

Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz chats with the Hall of Fame head coach about what’s changed in today’s game of college basketball, his thoughts on Duke’s freshman phenom Cooper Flagg, and the hurricane recovery efforts in his home state of North Carolina. Roy joined Yahoo Sports on behalf of Verizon and the “random acts of kindness” campaign.

Hanging out with basketball legend, icon coach Roy Williams, coach joining us on behalf of Verizon, doing something that’s inspiring and incredible.

I cannot wait to talk to you about it, coach.

This is a really cool initiative you’re doing with Verizon.

But before we do that, I’m talking to a legend about college basketball.

I got to talk to you a little bit about college basketball because I always think it’s interesting when you can talk to the icons and you are one of them.

When you watch college basketball today in a name image like this world where the game has changed so much.

What stands out to you?

Well, when I watched the game, I still watch the game that I love, you know, when the referee steps in there a couple of weeks from now and throws the ball up and it’s Duke against North Carolina, you know, nothing’s going to change and, uh, you know, everything around the court outside the court has changed dramatically.

There’s no question there, but I, I enjoy watching ball.

I do still enjoy the game.

And to me, the, the beauty of the game of basketball was taking 5 guys, very gifted, very talented guys and trying to make them into that one team and for everybody working together.

And so, I still enjoy watching that part of it too.

And it’s also interesting to me, Cooper Flag is sort of the biggest name in college basketball this year, and you’ve had some incredible players under your coaching tutelage.

When you have the best in the sport, uh, what, how do you approach that?

What’s the key to getting the most out of them?
