MADISON – Banished to the locker room after being ejected for a Flagrant 2 foul during the first half against Purdue on Saturday, Kamari McGee was alone and beside himself.
The Wisconsin senior guard’s emotions ran the gamut of frustration. He wasn’t sure whether to be mad or sad.
“I was back there by myself with my thoughts and the game,” he said. “I also might have done a little homework to cool myself down. I just needed something to take my mind of what had just happened. I was watching the game on my phone and I had my iPad, so I was just doing homework, being productive with my time.”
Yes, while 14,000-plus fans were screaming inside the bowl of the arena, McGee was in the cozy confines of the visitor’s locker room at Mackey Arena spending some of his time on his classwork. Consider it an interesting tidbit to one of the toughest moments of his college career.

The graduate of Racine St. Catherine’s high school was ejected with 6 minutes 20 seconds to go in the first half of a 94-84 win after colliding with Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn. McGee was chasing Boilermakers point guard Braden Smith, who took a handoff from Kaufman-Renn, just before the collision.
The 6-foot-9 forward was hit in the midsection/groin area and buckled as he drew the whistle. McGee got him with his right arm. The contact didn’t appear intentional, but that didn’t save McGee from a Flagrant 2 foul, which results in an automatic ejection.

McGee was thinking, at the most, Flagrant 1, which would have given Purdue two free throws and the ball but allowed him to continue.
The decision to call the foul a Flagrant 2 was widely criticized on social media. A Flagrant 2 foul is, according to the NCAA rule book, contact deemed “not only excessive, but also severe (brutal, harsh, cruel) or extreme (dangerous, punishing), while the ball is live.”
