Michigan State figures to challenge USC women on Wednesday

USC women’s basketball just escaped Seattle with a narrow win over the Washington Huskies. Now the Trojans move on to a bigger and more difficult challenge in the Big Ten. They face the nationally-ranked Michigan State Spartans on Wednesday night in what should be a tough game.

Spartans Wire has more on the Michigan State team USC will face on Wednesday:

“Michigan State women’s basketball went 1-1 during this past week, earning themselves a 20-point win against Wisconsin before traveling to the west coast, where the Spartans lost a heartbreaker against No. 1 UCLA.

“The Spartans showed that they are a team that is to be reckoned with, and that they have one of the most talented rosters in the Big Ten conference. Following the week, the Spartans remain unchanged in their ranking in the AP top 25 poll. The Spartans come into week 16 as the No. 22 team in the nation.”

Michigan State led UCLA 67-63 with just over four minutes left in Pauley Pavilion on Sunday night. Any team which can come very close to beating UCLA on the road is a good team. The Trojans have to mentally regroup from their difficult win over Washington — and another plane flight — and play with energy against the Spartans, whose guard-oriented lineup will test USC’s dribble-drive defense.

One key point here: USC has just two days off between the Washington and Michigan State games. If the Trojans can get through this game, they will get three full days off for the upcoming Illinois game, and will then have a full week off before the UCLA rematch on March 1. The Trojans are pushing through a tough, crowded part of the schedule. If they handle Michigan State, they will get more time to rest and recover afterward.
