Two weeks ago, Auburn basketball suffered a setback when it dropped a home game to then-No. 6 Florida, causing them to slide one spot in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll ahead of its showdown with rival Alabama, who jumped to the top.
Following Saturday’s showing in Tuscaloosa, in which it never trailed and held Alabama to 39% shooting, Auburn returned to its rightful place of No. 1 in the latest coaches poll by receiving the unanimous vote.
Auburn returns to No. 1 after picking up two key SEC road wins last week. Auburn first knocked off Vanderbilt in Nashville, 80-68, following a pair of 20-point efforts from Denver Jones and Tahaad Pettiford. The Tigers followed suit Saturday by beating rival Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 94-85. Auburn’s win was fueled by solid defense and a strong effort on offense that resulted in six players reaching double-figures in points.
The Crimson Tide fell to No. 4 in the coaches poll following its loss to Auburn. Florida and Duke jumped Alabama to move to No. 2 and No. 3 respectively while Houston slid into the No. 5 slot, jumping No. 6 Tennessee. Auburn has faced, or will face, seven teams ranked in this week’s top 10, holding a 5-2 record. The Tigers will meet No. 8 Texas A&M on Tuesday, March 4, four days before its rematch with the Crimson Tide in Neville Arena.
