For Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats, the week after the Auburn loss has felt a lot like the one that came after last season’s defeat to Tennessee.
The No. 4 Crimson Tide fell 94-85 to Bruce Pearl and the top-ranked Tigers on Saturday, while in March 2024, seven points saw the Volunteers take the win in Coleman Coliseum.
Players felt the same sting of a disappointing defeat, but didn’t spend time feeling sorry for themselves like they did after Tennessee claimed its second victory of the season over Alabama last year, according to Oats.

A turnover-heavy Alabama (21-4, 10-2 SEC) makes the trip to Mizzou Arena on Wednesday to face another ambush of Tigers that leads the league with an average 10 steals per game.
“We got to take care of the ball on offense because their points off turnovers. (Mizzou’s defense is) one of the better in the country. So those have been the points of emphasis,” Oats said. “It’s got to be one of those deals where can we bounce back after a tough loss with the proper mindset?”

Oats recalled being “disappointed with the leadership” going into what would eventually be a 105-87 loss at Florida, and wondered if the players who experienced that loss had “grown up and matured,” or if the freshest members of the roster would step up to the challenge.
“Based on yesterday’s practice and today’s practice, I think the answer is yes,” Oats said.
