Alabama basketball freshman Derrion Reid’s leg injury continues to linger

Alabama basketball freshman Derrion Reid’s playing status has been a question mark in the program for weeks, as he’s moved in and out of the lineup with limited minutes while trying to recover from a leg injury that’s bothered him on an ongoing basis.

And after playing sparingly in UA’s Saturday home loss to rival Auburn, he’s gone in the wrong direction. Coach Nate Oats said Reid is doubtful to play against Missouri on Wednesday after missing multiple practices in recent days.

“Derrion had the hamstring deal, and it’s one of those things where you don’t want to bring him back too early. We thought we’d rested him enough, but it kind of flared up again after (Auburn). He played limited minutes against Auburn, but he’s been out of practice,” Oats said. “He’s getting an MRI, his second, if not the third one, in the last two weeks, this morning I believe. He’ll be listed as probably doubtful just based on not practicing yesterday and today.”

Reid has averaged 7.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game for Alabama this season at the forward position, but has played in just four games over the past five weeks with the nagging injury. Per Oats, his ability to defend both guards and post players make him a big asset when healthy.

“Derrion is one of our best (big) size athletic defenders,” Oats said. “He’s done very good jobs on different guys when he’s been healthy throughout the year. It’d be great to have him. We’ve given up career highs to too many guys, and he’s a guy you can put on a one, two, three or four.”

Alabama (21-4, 10-2 SEC) visits Missouri on Wednesday (8 p.m. CT, SEC Network). If Reid sits out as expected, his next opportunity to play will be the Crimson Tide’s home game Saturday against Kentucky.
