UWGB men’s basketball, Doug Gottlieb finally celebrate a win: ‘It definitely feels good’

GREEN BAY – Finally.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball team broke a program-record 21-game losing streak Sunday with a 79-68 win over Wright State in front of 1,708 at the Kress Center.

After 89 long days without a single win — the last coming before Thanksgiving — first-year coach Doug Gottlieb and a team decimated by injuries and suiting up only nine players can breathe a sigh of relief.

UWGB still doesn’t have leading scorer Anthony Roy, who has been out since December with a broken ankle. It was without one of its best rebounders in newcomer Yonathan Levy, who is in concussion protocol.

It doesn’t matter quite as much when freshman guard Ben Tweedy has the game of his young career. Or when senior guard Ryan Wade, who has never had the same coach during any of his three seasons at UWGB, hits key 3-pointers. Or when junior guard Preston Ruedinger, who played with four fouls the final 7 minutes, 50 seconds, does the same.

A young team Gottlieb continues to tell people is growing and improving every day, who he insists refuses to check out on him or the season, put that promise all together against Wright State.

“I think we’ve been working week in and week out to get better,” Tweedy said. “Like I tell the guys after every game so far, we have got to remember we are not losers. We are a losing team right now, but we put the work in each day and keep on getting better.

“We just haven’t really figured out how to win yet, and I think today was a little bit of a turning point. We were down 11 at one point, and we kind of go, ‘Here it goes again.’ But I just reminded them, we have been here before. Let’s dig in and try to give these fans something to cheer about here.”

The 6-foot-2 Tweedy certainly did that. Making his fourth start of the season and first since Dec. 21, he scored 27 points and added 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 37 minutes. He put his body on the line time and time again, going to the line for 16 free throws…
