After an impressive 84-73 Quad 1 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday night, Iowa basketball (14-11, 5-9 Big Ten) was embarrassed on Sunday during a 101-75 blowout loss at No. 25 Maryland (20-6, 10-5) in front of a packed XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.
Offensively, the Hawkeyes shot a reasonable 31-for-71 (43.1%) from the floor, including 8-for-27 (29.6%) from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the charity stripe. Defensively, Iowa forced 11 Maryland turnovers, including six steals and two blocks.
Unfortunately for Iowa, Maryland shot an efficient 39-for-67 (58.2%) from the floor, 12-for-26 (46.2%) from deep, and 11-for-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line.
With the Hawkeyes suffering one of their worst losses of the season on Sunday, here are three thoughts that summarize their performance against the Terps.

While the Hawkeyes held a 51-47 advantage coming out of halftime, the Hawkeyes’ second-half offense was only able to muster 24 points in the final 20 minutes on an abysmal 11-for-37 (29.7%) shooting from the floor, 0-of-13 (0%) from deep, and 2-for-3 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.
Iowa simply could not capitalize offensively against a Terrapins defense that it could do no wrong against in the first half. Maryland forced six Hawkeye turnovers and secured 21 defensive rebounds in the second half.

In addition to the ugly score, Iowa was dominated in the rebounding category, 42-29. To make that stat even more painful, the Hawkeyes were walloped on the defensive glass, 32-19.
As has been a theme in most of Iowa’s losses, the Hawkeyes’ poor rebounding effort has been a major culprit to their eventual downfall.
