MSU Basketball reportedly heavily pursuing Ohio 5-star prospect

Michigan State basketball is one of the notable schools that is pursuing arguably the top small forward in the 2026 class.

On3 recruiting insider Joe Tipton reported on Monday that Michigan State is one of 20 schools to visit with five-star small forward Anthony Thompson. Tipton also noted that Tom Izzo is one of the few head coaches to visit with Thompson, making it clear that he’s a top priority prospect for the Spartans.

Purdue’s Matt Painter and Ohio State’s Jake Diebler were the other two head coaches Tipton noted as visiting with Thompson recently.

Anthony Thompson, the No. 6 overall recruit in the 2026 class, told @On3Recruits that these 20 college programs have been into see him this season.

The head coaches include Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Ohio State’s Jake Diebler, and Purdue’s Matt Painter.

Thompson ranks as the No. 3 small forward in 247Sports’ rankings for the 2026 class. He is also listed as the No. 9 player overall in the class and No. 1 player from Ohio.

Michigan State is one of more than 30 schools to offer Thompson, according to 247Sports. He also holds notable offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisville, Marquette, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio State, Purdue, Texas, UCLA and Xavier.
