How it happened: Oregon men’s basketball puts together complete effort in win vs. Rutgers

The deep shots were falling for Oregon Sunday night.

The Ducks’ defense wasn’t half bad either.

Behind one of its most complete efforts of the season, Oregon defeated Rutgers 75-57 in a Big Ten men’s basketball game in Matthew Knight Arena.

The victory, which came in front of a crowd of 8,635, was the second straight for the Ducks (18-8, 7-8 conference), who had lost five in a row until they beat Northwestern 81-75 on Tuesday to end the skid.

“This time of year is when you want to be playing your best basketball,” said Oregon assistant coach Tony Stubblefield, who handled postgame duties for coach Dana Altman, who was feeling under the weather. “Our guys are in a good place but you just gotta continue to get better as a team.”

It was the Ducks’ most decisive win since beating Weber State 89-49 on Dec. 29. It was also the fewest points allowed by Oregon since that same win.

“We felt like we played a full 40 minutes,” point guard Jackson Shelstad said. “Last couple games we’ve been up but we let teams get back into it so tonight we just kept our foot on the gas.”

Shelstad led Oregon with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, which tied his season high for made field goals. It was his fourth straight game scoring at least 18.

Shelstad wasn’t the only player who had a good night from the field, as the Ducks shot 46.7% overall, including a season-best 59.1% from 3-point range as they made 13-of-22 attempts. Seven players made at least one 3-pointer and five made at least two.

It was the most made 3s for the Ducks in their last 46 games.

“I think we were just sharing the ball and getting good looks,” Shelstad said. “The last two games we’ve just been sharing the ball a lot better so we just gotta keep playing like that.”
