Bracketology: Marquette seen as just on the edge of top 16 by NCAA Tournament committee

[ad_1]

The Marquette men’s basketball team was on the outside looking in when the NCAA Tournament committee released its first look at the top 16 teams on Saturday.

There is still one month before Selection Sunday, so teams’ outlooks can change quickly. MU and Michigan State were mentioned as teams “in consideration” for the final spots in the top 16.

But the Golden Eagles (19-6, 10-4 Big East), who are ranked 18th in the Associated Press and 16th in the USA TODAY coaches poll, don’t have many opportunities remaining for profile-changing victories.

Each Monday, the Journal Sentinel will take a look at MU’s previous week and assess how its résumé has changed and stacks up to the competition.

March Madness term to know: What is WAB?

Hardcore bracketologists have been looking at “wins above bubble” for years, but the term WAB will enter mainstream conversations this season with the NCAA committee looking at the metric for the first time. WAB measures how many more (or fewer) wins a team has earned against its schedule than what an average bubble team would do against the same teams.

MU’s WAB was ranked 19th on Sunday.

Marquette basketball scores last week

Feb. 11 vs. DePaul: The Golden Eagles only played once last week, overcoming an anemic 16% three-point shooting performance for a 68-58 victory at Fiserv Forum. Kam Jones had 19 points and Stevie Mitchell added 17.
