UWM basketball just did something no other team in the country has done this year

The play was rather mundane on its face.

With a tick over five minutes to play and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ahead by 16, Aaron Franklin was at the line looking to convert a three-point play. His free throw rimmed out harmlessly, the type of foul shot that, with the game already out of hand, always lands in the defense’s hands.

Except for when Jamichael Stillwell is playing.

The Panthers forward wiggled between a pair of defenders, soared above them to grab the ball and was fouled as he came down with the ball, his 13th and final rebound of an afternoon defined by just that for the hosts.

“The referees told us they were going to call fouls on the free throw line rebounds,” Panthers head coach Bart Lundy said. “I guess there’s a league mandate — it’s a Milwaukee mandate — that they’re going to call fouls on that, so our guys had it in their head that they had to be careful. And (Stillwell) still got around him, he still got inside position and drew the foul. There aren’t five players in the country that can do that.”

It was like that all day long for Stillwell and the Panthers.

After a slow start, Milwaukee scrapped, fought, hustled and outwilled Northern Kentucky to come away with a dominant second half and 92-70 win Sunday at the UWM Panther Arena.

With the win, which was the second-largest against a Division-I opponent under Lundy, the Panthers secured a third straight season with a winning conference record for the first time since they did it in four straight seasons from 2009-12. Two more wins would give them three straight 20-win campaigns for the first time since 2003-06.
