While Texas A&M men’s basketball was reeling off its 20th win of the season, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee recognized the Aggies as one of the best teams in the country this season.
The committee on Saturday revealed its top 16 seeds, about a month before the actual tournament selection show. A&M (20-5, 9-3 SEC) was one of six SEC teams to make the list. The Aggies are projected to be a No. 2 seed and are ranked the No. 6 seed overall.
The announcement came before many of Saturday’s games were final, but the SEC six spots in the rankings as well as the top two spots, with Auburn then Alabama listed Nos. 1 and 2.

“The narrative since the season began was how strong Southeastern Conference teams are, and that’s reflective in this Top 16 reveal,” said Bubba Cunningham, the chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and the director of athletics at North Carolina. “While each team is evaluated independent of their conference affiliation, there’s no escaping the fact that the league is on course for a historic season in terms of representation in the tournament, specifically the highly sought-after top 16 seeds.”
Cunningham said having five of the top six teams come from one conference is “equally impressive as it is unusual.” The Big 12 had the second-most ranked teams at five, including Texas-based programs Texas Tech and Houston.
Owning seven Quadrant 1 wins and a top-five “wins above bubble” ranking, Texas A&M added to its resume Saturday with a convincing 69-61 win over Arkansas. “Wins above bubble” is a metric that compares how a team has played against it schedule versus how a bubble team would be expected to perform.
Most bracket projections list Buzz Williams’ team as a top-three seed.
