Unlikely star has career day as Clemson routs Florida State for latest ACC win

Dillon Hunter had a career-high 17 points, Ian Schieffelin had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and the No. 19 Clemson Tigers continued their roll through conference play by beating ACC rival Florida State 72-46 at Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee Saturday.

A few days after completing a season sweep of their Tobacco Road rivals with big wins over No. 2 Duke and North Carolina, the Tigers (21-5 overall, 13-2 ACC) picked up their sixth straight win over Florida State (15-10, 6-8) dating back to 2022-23 to sweep the season series for a third straight year.

The 26-point win was also the largest margin of victory by a Brad Brownell team away from Littlejohn Coliseum in his 15th season as Clemson’s coach. Clemson never led by less than 15 points after halftime.

Much as they did in Monday’s 85-65 rout of UNC, Clemson started the game strong. The Tigers took a 22-7 lead with a 10-0 run early and took its first 20-point lead on a layup by Schieffelin for a 34-14 advantage with 2:58 to play in the first half.

Hunter had 12 points to lead the way in the opening 20 minutes. The Tigers led 36-19 at halftime after making 50 percent of their shots (16-of-32) while holding Florida State to 32 percent (8-of-25).

Clemson never led by fewer than 15 points in the second half and would go up by as many as 27 after Schieffelin drained a 3-pointer for a 62-35 lead with less than six minutes to play.

In addition to big games from Hunter and Schieffelin, Chauncey Wiggins had 11 points to give Clemson three players in double figures. Viktor Lakhin had nine points, and the Tigers finished the afternoon by shooting 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field. They led 14-0 in points off turnovers at halftime.

With Saturday’s win, Clemson is a half-game behind Duke (21-3, 13-1) in the ACC standings race with five games to go in the regular season.
