Indiana basketball player ratings vs UCLA: Guard play steady in another close loss

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball battled from behind for the breadth of the second half Friday, before falling 72-68 to visiting UCLA.

Here’s how the Hoosiers graded out:

STARTERS

Trey Galloway: 7/10

Struggled to find his shooting range early but contributed in other ways, namely six rebounds and six assists. Absorbed a lot of ball-handling duties and managed UCLA’s pressure well. He committed just three turnovers on a night when IU (15-11, 6-9 Big Ten) only gave away eight, a sturdy number against the takeaway-minded Bruins.

Anthony Leal: 6/10

Held one of the best plus-minus numbers among Hoosiers on Friday night, which told a certain story. Has become a reliable, versatile defender for Mike Woodson as he approaches the end of his college career.

Luke Goode: 7/10

One of Indiana’s best players, not just Friday night but this season. The 3-point shooting has been a godsend, Goode helps on the glass and his midrange game has been a quiet revelation. The Illinois transfer has made a meaningful impact again and again, more than justifying his place in the starting lineup.

Mackenzie Mgbako: 6/10

Started strong then lost most of the first half to an apparent ankle/leg injury. Stayed aggressive after returning to start the second half but struggled to find clean looks against tough UCLA defense. Still scored in double figures, on a night when Indiana needed offense where it could find some. Narrowly missed a layup to tie and then a 3 to lead on the pivotal possession at the end of the second half.

Oumar Ballo: 5/10

UCLA (19-7, 10-5) was able to isolate him offensively in ways Michigan State could not, and in Aday Mara, Ballo found one of the few centers in the league able to make Ballo play small. One of his quieter outings but made good hustle plays. Felt like the Bruins’ familiarity with his game from his Pac-12 days might have played a role.

Stevens to IU? Boston…
