Whoever athletic director Scott Dolson hires as the next Indiana basketball coach will have pretty good ammo to take to recruits, those in the transfer portal and from high school.

Robbie Hummel was calling Friday’s game as the Hoosiers hosted UCLA at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall as an analyst for Fox and repeatedly touted how great and how loud the venue gets. During an official review midway through the second half, the broadcast showcased a graphic that highlighted Hummel’s numbers at Assembly Hall while playing for Purdue: 18.0 points on 56% shooting and 7.0 rebounds per game.

“I loved playing here,” Hummel said. “Honestly, it just it felt so big. And when you played the rivalry of Purdue-Indiana, you realize who’s coached on those sidelines, Gene Keady and Bobby Knight. You realize who’s played in that game. You just also felt like if you didn’t come in here and bring your best, you could get embarrassed.”

The Boilermakers were 1-2 in those three rivalry games Hummel played in. Hummel, who was the No. 59 recruit in his class per 247Sports composite, chose the Boilermakers over IU in the 2007 class. Play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti joked that everyone from Valparaiso, where Hummel played high school basketball, was there, leading to love for the Region from Hummel.

But Hoosiers fans weren’t so kind during his playing days. Benetti, known for pop culture references and conversations during broadcasts, gave Hummel the floor for how Hoosiers students taunted him with a reference to “Tropic Thunder.”

“Well, Ben Stiller plays a character that is kind of like, not the smartest guy,” Hummel said. “I believe they called it Simple Jack in the movie, there was a sign that said ‘Simple Robbie,’ and they were chanting it while I was shooting free throws.”

Benetti quipped, “and they superimposed your face, to be clear.”
