Auburn basketball vs. Alabama: Scouting report, prediction for No. 1 vs. 2 matchup

[ad_1]

The moment is finally here, as a years-in-the-making showdown between No. 1 Auburn basketball and No. 2 Alabama will take place Saturday (3 p.m., ESPN) in Tuscaloosa.

It’ll be the first-ever No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the history of the SEC, and it’s solely a Yellowhammer State affair.

“I just don’t think — if you would try and predict who would be in that matchup — Kentucky certainly would be a school that would be in it. It’d be Kentucky and who else? Could it be Tennessee? Could it be Florida? Could it be Arkansas back in the day with Nolan Richardson? Could it be a Dale Brown LSU team? Who could it be?” Bruce Pearl said Thursday. “I don’t think many people would have picked Auburn and Alabama to be those teams. And yet, since ’17-18, Alabama and Auburn have won eight championships. The championships in the SEC, I guess, over the last eight years, run through the state of Alabama.”

As the Tigers and Crimson Tide get set to make history, here’s everything you need to know about Saturday’s matchup.

While Auburn’s roster should be at full-go, the Crimson Tide will have two players — Houston Mallette and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. — sidelined by way of season-ending injuries. And it could have a third player out.

Derrion Reid, who was listed as questionable heading into Alabama’s win over Texas, was scratched against the Longhorns. He’s played in just 17 of Alabama’s 24 games this season, and the Texas win was his second-straight missed appearance.

The freshman’s been a decent contributor off the bench, averaging 7.2 points in 16.9 minutes.
