WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue men’s basketball center Trey Kaufman-Renn placed blame and credit where it belonged following Tuesday’s 75-73 loss at Michigan.
He credited the Wolverines for “putting the people on the floor they need to win games.” He knows the Boilermakers had chances to prevent that battle for the Big Ten lead to come down to one possession.
He blamed two mistakes he personally made down the stretch — not the officiating — for a loss which dropped Purdue back to second place.

However, that night continued an ongoing theme, now in at least its third week. The three-time Big Ten Player of the Week’s performances are increasingly defined by fouls — how many he commits, and when, and whether he’s receiving the same treatment at the other end.
He emerged from the locker room after a Feb. 4 win at Iowa expecting questions about another bout of foul trouble.
“I was thinking about how I was going to answer this question,” Kaufman-Renn said.
He talked about needing better body language. He talked about controlling what he can control. He talked about watching film and seeing what he considered “bad calls” against him while at the other end he’s “just getting hacked.”

“But it’s something I’ve got to work on,” Kaufman-Renn said. “It’s my responsibility to be able to control my emotions and I guess just give people layups and not pick up a second foul.”
