Texas basketball (15-10, 4-8 SEC) dropped a third consecutive SEC game Tuesday with a 103-80 loss to No. 1 Alabama on its home court. The Longhorns now enter a critical contest Saturday against No. 18 Kentucky (17-7, 6-5) desperately needing a high-profile win to strengthen a case for the NCAA Tournament that seems to get weaker with each game.

If Texas can bounce off the NCAA bubble and into seeding projections, Texas coach Rodney Terry knows his team needs to tighten up its defense. Alabama, the nation’s highest-scoring team at 90 points a game, made 17-of-29 3-pointers and shot 61.8% from the floor in its win Tuesday.

Freshman Tre Johnson and graduate Jayson Kent proved the two bright spots for a banged-up Texas squad that missed forward Devon Pryor and had forward Arthur Kaluma leave the game early. Johnson, the freshman shooting guard projected as a lottery pick, scored a game-high 24 points while Kent had his highest-scoring game since arriving at Texas from Indiana State in the offseason with 19 points.
