Braden Smith is playing at an All-American level this season, leading Purdue basketball into the nation’s top 10.
But is he in the same breath with Steph Curry? Michigan assistant coach Mike Boynton thinks so.
“I’ve coached against all of them,” Boynton texted to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander this week. “Steph is the only one who, at the time in college, has been better than Braden Smith.”
And by “against all of them,” Boynton means Jalen Brunson, John Wall, Tremont Waters, Devon Dotson, Joel Berry, Brandon Knight, Eric Bledsoe, Jevon Carter, Deuce McBride, Trae Young, Steph Curry, Frank Mason, Devonte Graham, Monte Morris, Tyrese Haliburton and Jeff Teague.
“That is insane, insane praise,” Norlander said, adding that Smith stands third in the Player of the Year race to Cooper Flagg of Duke and Johni Broome of Auburn.
Insider: Purdue leaves the door open, and Michigan takes the Big Ten lead
Purdue played Michigan twice in recent weeks, each team winning at home. Smith scored 24 points in each game, and he compiled 17 assists and 13 rebounds. Smith averages 16.4 points on 39.2% 3-point shooting, 8.6 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
“Even if you want to disagree with Boynton on that, he’s the one who has had to scheme against those point guards,” Norlander said.
Boynton started on a coaching path in 2004 after playing for four years at South Carolina. He was Oklahoma State’s head coach for seven years and is a first-year assistant at Michigan.
