Malik Reneau powered Indiana basketball to a 71-67 upset victory over No. 11 Michigan State on Tuesday night, scoring 19 points and with 12 rebounds off the bench.

The junior was relieved to snap a five-game losing streak that led to coach Mike Woodson’s departure at season’s end.

“Everybody knew what the situation is now so we’re just coming together and playing as hard as we can every time we step on the court,” he said.

Reneau acknowledged the noise surrounding the program, which had lost seven of eight games before Tuesday.

“A lot of media out there saying things about me, about us,” he said. “It felt good to get a win.”

Reneau came off the bench Tuesday, scoring IU’s first basket but doing little else in the first half. He became the Hoosiers’ go-to player in the second half.

“I was getting frustrated with myself early in the stretch, but coach came up to me and told me … to go straight at the rim, and that’s what I started doing in the second half. Everything was working for me,” he said.
