On Tuesday, the No. 2 Auburn Tigers earned another SEC win by taking down Vanderbilt, 80-68, at the pestiferous Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.
The Tigers connected on over half of their shots from the field including nine three-point attempts, scored 19 points on 12 Vanderbilt turnovers, and received 29 points from their bench players. Their recipe for success also included 20-point efforts from Denver Jones and Chaney Johnson.
While the score and the stat sheet show the Tigers’ dominating effort, their resilience and tenacity ultimately lifted them to victory. After jumping out to a 15-0 lead to begin the game, Auburn squandered away the lead to Vanderbilt in the early stages of the second half before piecing together a 29-19 run over the final 13:51 to secure the win.
Auburn’s ability to respond to Vanderbilt’s adjustments impressed Commodores’ head coach Mark Byington, who gave Auburn credit during his postgame press conference.
“(Auburn) is really good. I’m not saying any breaking news,” Byington said Tuesday. “They’ve been in a lot of situations. We just didn’t have an answer. That’s as good of a team as there is in the country.”
In addition to its 52% shooting night, the Tigers limited Vanderbilt to 42% shooting and 3-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc. Byington failed to see any flaws in Auburn on Tuesday.
“They don’t have any weaknesses. They can play any style of basketball,” Byington said of Auburn. “Their offense was really good… and I thought their defense was very impressive tonight.”
Auburn’s win at Vanderbilt put them back on the winning track and will give them confidence heading into the biggest “Iron Bowl of Basketball” in history with No. 1 Alabama. Tipoff between the Tigers and Tide is set for 3 p.m. CT at Coleman Coliseum on Saturday.
