Tar Heels’ still on bubble even after loss to Clemson

The North Carolina Tar Heels really needed a win on Monday night to boost its NCAA Tournament resume, facing a quad 1 opportunity at Clemson. Instead, they were blown out by the Tigers which put a big dent in their chances.

With just under a month left of regular season games plus the ACC Tournament, UNC is going to need to go on a magical run if they want to make the tournament. If not, it will be the second time in four years UNC will miss the tournament and the third time they will have been on the bubble in late February.

But even with that loss, some experts believe UNC is still on the doorstep of the tournament, shockingly enough.

In Joe Luanrdi’s latest Bracketology released on Tuesday, the analyst put the Tar Heels as one of his “first four out” teams even after the loss. That’s a little surprising seeing that UNC is 1-10 in quad 1 games this season and only has one more opportunity left, playing Duke in the season finale.

Joining UNC on that “first four out” line are Arkansas, VCU and SMU. The Tar Heels did beat SMU earlier in the season, maybe why they are ahead of them. Pitt, Xavier, UC San Diego and Boise State are on the “next four out” line behind the Tar Heels.

Whether we agree or not, it’s simple for UNC. They have to win games and essentially almost win out. That starts Saturday on the road against an 11-14 Syracuse squad.
