Michigan basketball wins yet another way over No. 7 Purdue: “That’s the beauty of our team”

Will Tschetter’s roommate Ian Burns, a walk-on for the Michigan basketball team, spent time the past two days handing out flyers around various Ann Arbor establishments as a reminder.

The Wolverines were set to host No. 7 Purdue with a first-place spot in the Big Ten on the line.

In addition to coach Dusty May making a public plea Monday and graduate wing Nimari Burnett asking fans to be loud all game long on the team’s social media page, Burns wanted to leave no stone unturned.

U-M needed every bit of juice from the sold out Crisler Center crowd, which stayed engaged all night long and helped Michigan (19-5, 11-2 Big Ten) keep its energy up. The Wolverines overcame multiple 10-point deficits and used a 12-2 run late to topple the Boilermakers, 75-73, and scoot past them for the league lead.

“Probably the loudest it’s been in there (in my career), at least top two or three,” Tschetter said postgame with a smile. “It just feeds into how we’re playing. … It was big time.”

The victory was the fifth in a row for May’s group, all of which have come in tight contests, between two- and four-point margins. The Wolverines have needed to make plays down the stretch every time, only Tuesday it came differently.

The trio of Danny Wolf, Vlad Goldin and Tre Donaldson, known in Ann Arbor as “the big three,” each finished Saturday’s road win at Indiana with 18 points or more and combined to score 25 of 27 points in the second half. Tuesday was another story entirely.

Nobody on U-M scored more than 15 points on the night, while the Boilermakers had three players who scored 15 or more. The difference, however, U-M’s depth. The Wolverines outscored Purdue’s group 21-0 off the bench, led by Roddy Gayle’s 14 points.
