It’s prove-it week for Missouri basketball: Why OU game may be most important of MU’s year

Let last week’s two losses linger, and allow a third straight to slip? The future gets a little more tense.

It is prove-it week for No. 22/21-ranked Missouri basketball, which fell six spots in both major national polls after an 0-2 week. The Tigers acquitted themselves well in both losses, which is the reason they didn’t fall out of the rankings altogether.

Now, Missouri (17-6, 6-4 SEC) has much bigger fish to fry.

There’s no shame in a four-point loss at No. 4/4 Tennessee, especially when the Volunteers put together their best 3-point shooting night of the season (by more than 14 percentage points). Texas A&M has won five of its past six games, and a clutch, late shot from Wade Taylor IV to down Mizzou was enough to earn the Aggies a consensus top-10 ranking.

The two losses are near-imminently salvageable. You could even sell the stance that by going 2-0 against ranked Ole Miss and Mississippi State in the two previous games, the Tigers are exactly where they were expected to be, which is still in the hunt for an SEC Tournament double-bye and on pace for a sweat-free Selection Sunday as the NCAA Tournament participants are revealed.

Depending on Wednesday’s result against Oklahoma, that all could change.

To assess the gravity of the upcoming game, let’s look forward a little.

After hosting the Sooners, Mizzou travels to Georgia. Then, No. 1/2 Alabama visits Columbia next Wednesday. Then, it’s back on the road to Bud Walton Arena for a game against the suddenly intriguing Arkansas Razorbacks.

Consider the ramifications if Missouri doesn’t beat OU on Wednesday, a game that tips off at 8 p.m. at Mizzou Arena.
